Ephesus Ancient City ;
Ephesus is the most fascinating site in Turkey.The city has been excavated for more than one hundred years;the extensive remains are predominantly from later Roman period. Ephesus has a rich Christian history. Apostle Paul probably spent two and half years in Ephesus Ephesus was also home for the early philosopher Heraclitus.
The Terrace Houses on the Curetes street belonged to the rich people of Ephesus.They were luxurious private houses with fountains and central heating.Between the street and houses was a portico with a mosaic floor,behind which were shops.
House of Virgin Mary;
It is the place where Blessed Virgin is said to have spent last years of her life on earth. It is estimated that Mary came in the area with Saint John the Evangelist (Apostle) who spent three years in Ephesus to spread out the Word of Christ and Christianity. Pope Paul the 6th in 1967, John Paul the 2nd in 1979 and finally Benedict the 16th in 2006, paid an official visit to the church. The church is still active for worship.
Basilica of St.John ;
It is believed that St. John the Evangelist had spent last years of his life in the region around Ephesus.Following his death,a simple grave was built for him on the southern slope of Ayasuluk Hill. The place was converted into a church in the 4th A.D. The remnants of the church are still in existance.
The Temple of Artemis ;
The Temple of Artemis was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.The Tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus was the other wonder in western Asia Minor. The temple is sitting at a great place where you can see 3 different religion’s worship places as a Greek-Pagan Temple, a Mosque and a Church in the same angle.
